Real Women Have Curves...

Thursday, August 10, 2006

In many of the discussions I've had with other real women, it's agreed that not everyone is reed thin like various fashion designers would have you believe. It's a fact that in America, a large number are size 12 or more. However, more and more stores are sizing clothes to where they may say they are Size 0 or 2. To quote The Devil Wears Prada:

Andy Sachs: Doesn't anybody eat around here?
Nigel: Not since two is the new four and zero is the new two.
Andy Sachs: Well, I'm a six...
Nigel: Aha, the new fourteen.

Fashion designers are jumping on the vanity bandwagon and they are not being held accountable for less than accurate sizing. Case in point - I got a beautiful teal silk blouse in a size 16 from Bloomingdales.com two weeks ago. When I received it, upon trying the blouse on, I couldn't even button the blouse as it wasn't made for those with a "more ample bosom". So, my guess is that the blouse is a hybrid of a 12/14. Had I buttoned it up, it would have been a serious Pamela Anderson moment. Now, should I care to order up I could, but I thought - "You know - the designer needs to have their eyes checked" and that blouse promptly went back with a note to self, "Bloomingdales - try the clothes on at the stores THEN order online should I care to use coupons/sales/FatWallet".

I just had to wonder - when are designers going to straighten up and fly right? We are beautiful, successful, vivacious and opinionated women. We deserve to wear beautiful outfits. We shouldn't have to settle for what these "fashion houses" dictate should go to today's curvy woman. It's like settling for the fashion "scraps" if you will and, for me, that's not acceptable.

If I don't love it, I don't buy it. Period. What's the point of buying some outfit that Lane Bryant or Macy*s says I should wear, when I think it looks either (a) matronly or frumpy or (b)way too young or casual. Also, sometimes these designers need to design for women with curves and realize that some of their "fashion choices" can look a tad too skanky. Again, just my opinion.

I've made a resolution to abide by the What Not to Wear Rules - It has to look good ON ME, not on the hanger. If it looks like crap, it's going back. I refuse to settle any longer.
